The class of 57 fellows will undergo training to learn how to implement better diversity, equity and inclusion practices to address structural racism within newsrooms.
TOLEDO, Ohio — June 13, 2022 — Larry Graham, founder and director of The Diversity Pledge Institute, has been named a 2022 Maynard 200 Fellow by the Maynard Institute. The fellowship seeks to cultivate media industry leaders who are dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in journalism, according to the institute.
“I have experienced how hard it can be to be the only journalist of color in a room. It’s why I founded The Diversity Pledge Institute,” Graham said. “I’m so humbled and grateful that the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education has recognized the value of DPI’s work to advance DEI in the news industry and has selected me as a Maynard 200 fellow.”
The 57 fellows will participate in a two-week in-person training hosted by the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism as well as additional virtual webinars throughout the summer. The journalists — who are affiliated with a mix of mainstream, ethnic, local, community and niche media, as well as entrepreneurial ventures — will spend the fall working with industry experts relevant to their area of interest. This one-on-one mentorship will last through October 2023.
“Earlier generations of Maynard Institute program alumni have ascended to the highest levels of American journalism,” Evelyn Hsu, co-executive director of the Maynard Institute, said in a release. “We have great hopes that graduates of Maynard 200 will have similar accomplishments.”
The Maynard Institute selects media leaders from various backgrounds such as investigative storytelling, frontline editors and managers, executive leadership, and media entrepreneurship. Click here to find out more about this year’s cohort.
